Captain Marvel Movie Review

Captain Marvel Review (no spoilers that haven't been seen in trailers):

Rating: Captain Marvel gets 5 out of 5 Power Blasters!

Quite simply, Captain Marvel is Marvel-ous. Andrea and walked out of the theater and the first 2 things we said were "I can't believe people have been giving this movie average reviews." and "This was better than Wonder Woman."

Now, for the details.

This is non-stop action from beginning to end. Even the few part where they have the obligatory talking, such as when Marvel and Fury are driving or sitting and talking, or when Marvel is reunited with her old pilot friend, are kept to a minimum and the conversations are short.

People have complained on line that the movie spends too much time on her backstory. Bull. It's done very effectively and it's just as exciting as the events that take place in real time.

As always, there is just the right mix of humor in the movies, with all the characters, even the bad guys, getting off good one-liners.

The acting is excellent. Bree, a subdued and more light-hearted Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, and Ben Mendolsohn all do fantastic jobs with their parts. Mendolsohn, in particular, displays a droll wit that had me laughing.

There are some nice twists in the movie, a few of which have upset fans of the comic book series, but I enjoyed them. As long as you're not expecting this to be an exact clone of the comics, you shouldn't care, either.

The movie does a nice job of setting up Capt. Marvel's appearance in the next Avengers' movie (and lets us in on how the Avengers gets started in the first place) without giving anything away, and even links back to Captain America and the original Avengers movies in a neat way.

With all the great Marvel Comics movies (and now with DC finally getting its shit together and doing decent movies that follow the Marvel format), it's getting harder and harder to place the movies in a specific order of greatness. So instead, I've taken to grouping them. Best group, next batch, and so on down to the bottom of the barrel (Superman, Batman).

With that in mind, here is how Captain Marvel fits into my rating system:

Best of the Best:
Spider-Man 1 (Toby Maguire)
Iron Man 1
Avengers (1, Infinity War, tie)
Guardians of the Galaxy 1
Captain Marvel

Really Great:
Thor: Ragnorok
Deadpool
X-men & X2 (tied)
Captain America (1, Winter Soldier, tie)
Black Panther
Wonder Woman
Iron Man 3 & Spider-Man Homecoming (tied)
X-men: Origins
The Amazin Spider Man /Amazing 2 (tied)

Damn Good but not Perfect:
Aquaman & Fantastic 4 (first one, in 2005)
Thor Dark World
Iron Man 2
Spider-Man 2 and 3 (Toby) (tied)
X-men: First Class
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Dr. Strange & Ant Man 1 (tied)
X-men: Last Stand
The Wolverine
Deadpool 2

Okay, but Not Great:
FF4 - Silver Surfer
X-men: Days of Future Past
Age of Ultron
Ant Man & Wasp
Justice League
Ghostrider

Bottom of the Barrel:
Batman v Superman
The first 2 Hulk movies (Hulk, Incredible Hulk)
The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight
Batman Begins
Man of Steel
The new Fantastic 4 (2015)
Green Lantern

Skip them and Watch Married with Children reruns:
Any earlier Batman or Superman movies
Daredevil
Catwoman
Elektra
Ghostrider 2

  1. You don't like Michael Keaton's Batman? Sacred bleu!

Lately, I've fallen out of watching Marvel and DC movies, but this does sound like a good one, and I always make an exception for Thor.

Friends Unseen

Catherine Cavendish is the author of  several novels and novellas, including The Devil's Serenade, Dark Avenging Angel, Saving Grace Devine, and The Pendle Curse. Today she's here to talk about some rather unsettling imaginary friends. When you were growing up, did you have an imaginary friend? Did they seem real to you? Maybe sort-of-real. You could talk to them, imagine their responses, play with them - but you probably kept the ‘relationship’ within certain boundaries, however young you were. In my case, I invented an entire family of siblings – three sisters (two older, one a few years younger) and an older brother who looked out for us girls. Being an only child, I found them comforting, and fun, but I never imagined them to be real. They, in turn, kept themselves firmly lodged in my own mind and never attempted to cross any boundary into the real world. In my novel, The Devil’s Serenade, my central character also had an imaginary family when she was a chil...

VAMPIRES: LOVE & VIOLENCE - guest blog by Nancy Kilpatrick

VAMPIRES: LOVE & VIOLENCE Nancy Kilpatrick  Today's blog features a special guest appearance by acclaimed author and editor, Nancy Kilpatrick, who's written more than 20 novels in the horror, supernatural, and paranormal genres, edited 15 anthologies, and been recognized by Fangoria as "Canada's answer to Anne Rice."  She's best known for her vampire novels and short stories, including her latest, Savagery of the Rebel King , which comes out this month. I've been a fan of hers for a long time, and I'm more than happy to have her with us today talking about those sexy, scary creatures of the night, vampires !  **************   I've written and read way more vampire books than any mortal likely should.  The Undead have always fascinated me. They look like us, and now the modern vampire (unlike their dirtier grave-dwelling ancestors) smells like us. They sit at the next table at chic eateries and on one of the plastic seats at ...

Hark! The Herald Angels Scream - a review

So, I recently finished reading the holiday-themed horror anthology Hark! The Herald Angels Scream , edited by Christopher Golden and published through Blumhouse Books. As you can probably deduce, the antho's theme is holiday-oriented stories. Some involve Christmas, some Yule, and some just the general winter season of December. All of them have a dark core, and the stories range from outright horror scares to subtle suspense, with more than a few falling in the 'weird fiction' category. The TOC includes some of the genre's biggest names (Joe R. Lansdale, Sarah Pinborough, Jonathan Maberry, Kelley Armstrong, Josh Malerman) along with several acclaimed authors who aren't in the public eye but should be. My favorites in the anthology are "Mistletoe and Holly" by James A. Moore (a gleefully twisted take on the old adage of be careful what you wish for), "Love Me" by Thomas E. Sniegoski (a poignant example of how trying to do the right thing...
